200 Best Songs of the 2000's: 170-161
Well, well, well... It's me again. I got a little busy and lost some steam for this, but here we are. Another installment, I'm gonna try and do better at this. No promises, though. Lol. This time, we have 170-161.
What quickly became one of my favorite Killers songs back in high school, this song basically encapsulated my desires as a teen. I wanted to be good at music and play indie pop/rock. I soon found out that I was bad at instruments, and didn't have a great voice. So this song suffices.
"Rockin' the Suburbs" was an insane album to drop as a solo artist after Ben broke off from Ben Folds Five. It had hit after hit, but none that hit me as hard as this one. Catchy drums, and a compelling story of a friend that tripped on drugs, and then became a born again christian.
I don't really know what to say about this one except you couldn't escape it when it came out, and I doubt you'll ever forget this instant classic.
Hey! Less Than Jake again! This song is one of their more ambitious songs with this one. It is a great album closer (if you don't count the "Surrender" cover). It has a narrative of falling apart and not living up to expectations until the fuse finally runs out (Which you can actually hear in the song). It's the definition of a jam.
Classic Muse, with a classic Muse sound. This album has some of my favorite songs of this decade, including this one. It is another one of those high school jams that takes me back to driving around in George's old van throwing water balloons at young lovers and playing NBA Jams.
If you're a fan of "Friday Night Lights", the season 2 finale has this song in it, and it is perfectly weighted with what is happening in the episode. I won't spoil it, but the shot of Landry and Tara when the guitars hit hard sends chills up my spine.

Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own
I always wonder what Amy Winehouse would have done with her career if she hadn't passed. This song is an amazing juxtaposition from her lyrics of rejection of love with the sample of the classic Marvin Gaye "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" that is all about how there is nothing that's gonna stop their love. There are deep emotions in these lyrics, because they are literally about her ex leaving her for his old girlfriend. All around, a great lyrical work with an expertly used sample.
This song might sound familiar to you, that's because Kanye West basically sampled it on his song "Blame Game". Kanye refused to admit that he sampled it, and claimed that it “contains elements of Avril 14 by Richard James”, It's a basic piano piece that is hauntingly beautiful, especially coming from the notoriously weird and creepy Aphex Twin. Listen for yourself and see if Kanye did rip him off.

Coconut Records - West Coast
A small little ditty by the actor Jason Schwartzman, who was also the drummer for the band Phantom Planet. There are a lot of emotions swirling around in this song, and it made my high school heart want love so bad. It will still throw me back into those days every time I hear it. Nostalgia factor for sure.

Band of Horses - The Funeral
Band of Horses came as fast as they left. Sometimes they seem like a distant dream that never actually happened. I remember hearing this song for the first time, and the distorted guitar intro, and Ben Bridwell's distinct vocals. It shot some sort of energy into my veins, and continued to be a staple of my musical collection for quite a bit of time.

Hope you enjoyed this installation. Sorry it took so long to get this out there. Again, I will try to be better, and get it out more frequently. I should be getting a tablet soon, so I'll be able to get them out more frequently and more on time. As always, there is a spotify link below. Look out for the next installment on Wednesday! Thanks again for reading.
