200 Best Songs of the 2000's: 190-181
And we're back! This time, we have 190-181. I hope you enjoyed the last post, and hope you like this one as well.
Fun. struck gold when they released "Aim and Ignite". Criminally overshadowed by their second album "Some Nights", "Aim and Ignite" was a finely crafted work of art that journeyed through love, heartbreak, family matters, and the balancing act of life. The final song on "Aim and Ignite" is "Take Your Time (Coming Home). A 7 minute adventure of enjoying the way home, and finding the love that makes it all worth it. The production on this song is immaculate with layered harmonies, and a myriad of instruments that never feel out of place, no matter what is going on in the song.
If you're a fan of Letterkenny, you'll know that they have one of the best soundtracks of any TV show on television right now. "All You Really Have To Do" is a song discovered from Letterkenny. It feels like it belongs in the 60s or 70s with the classic rock with rousing guitar riffs, and vocals that remind you of The Guess Who or Foghat. This song is a good time and is nonstop for a short short 2:48. Pitter patter.
There was a time where you could only find the live version of this song. I'm glad that they released a studio version of the title track of this album. You lose a lot of the raw energy from the live version, but you hear a lot of the instrumentals that were difficult to hear originally. Even with the lost emotion of a live show, you still get a lot of the pain in the voice of Alex Greenwald. For a simple song, you feel so much throughout it.
This is both OK Go's best song, while also being one of it more underappreciated songs. A song about letting the pain flow like rain, and letting go of it all. This song will always remind me of my best bud, George, because he was the one that introduced this gem to me.
There was a time where I thought that listening to Muse made me a smarter person than everyone else in my grade, and while I was (lol), I didn't realize that Muse was pretty much peak rock music around high school and most people really liked them, even the people I didn't like. You can't go wrong with classic Matt Bellamy vocals and lyrics, and overall, a solid example of a Muse song.

Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream
An easily recognizable hit that was instantly catchy, well produced, and all around a song that basically was all over my junior high and high school for a couple years. Need I say more?
When I first got an iPod, my family didn't own a computer that was new enough to run iTunes, so I just had an empty iPod for like 3 weeks. I finally went over to my cousin's house and convinced him to give me all of his music. Turns out all he had was death metal, and the younger Dakota was not a fan of death metal. Luckily, he also had Less Than Jake on there, and I immediately gravitated to their 2004 album "Anthem". A truly complete album that can be listened to over and over again. "The Science of Selling Yourself Short" resonated with a young junior high kid that didn't have high self-esteem, and identified with the line "I think it's fine by me, that I'm my own worst enemy."

Tokyo Police Club - Tessellate
Tokyo Police Club - Tessellate
When you hear the title "Tessellate", you probably think of Alt-j, but you'd be surprised to know that this song came out before the Alt-j classic. In fact, I remember driving around with a friend, and she exclaimed that "Tessellate is a great song to make out to". This confused me, because this song is high energy and definitely not something I'd make out to. Turns out she was talking about the Alt-j song... With bouncing keyboard lines, driving and aggressive drumbeats, and a distinct vocal track from lead singer David Monks this song never fails to put a smile on my face and bring me back to the night that I thought my friend made out to music that wasn't made to make out to.

Bowling For Soup - Almost
When this song comes on, it throws me back to The William's kitchen, playing Tetris, listening to the clean version of this song where instead of the line "Lost to a slut with much bigger breastes." it says "Lost to a girl who sews her own dresses". A fun song about the hypothetical choices that Jaret Reddick didn't make.

Motion City Soundtrack - Everything is Alright
While a friend introduced me to "The Future Freaks Me Out", MTV introduced me to "Everything Is Alright". I remember I would wake up early to watch music videos, and one day, this pop punk hit about mental stability came on with a wacky music video and catchy guitar riff, and it still to this day is one of my favorite songs I ever found on MTV.
